Parasympathetic nerve fiber (colon)

Molecular classification
Other (autonomic nerve fiber; not a discrete protein, receptor, or molecule)
01

Overview

Parasympathetic nerves in the colon are extrinsic autonomic nerve fibers, primarily derived from the pelvic splanchnic nerves (S2–S4), that innervate the distal colon and rectum. They facilitate colonic peristalsis, secretomotor activity, and defecation via stimulation of enteric neural circuits. These fibers are not a molecular entity but a functional/anatomical component of the nervous system. Their neurotransmitter is mainly acetylcholine, acting on muscarinic receptors in the enteric nervous system. Dysfunction or damage to these nerves can lead to disorders of colonic motility and defecation.

02

Mechanism of action

Modulation of neurotransmitter release (primarily acetylcholine) at neuroeffector junctions in the colon Enhancement or inhibition of parasympathetic activity via central or ganglionic mechanisms

03

Biological functions

Control of colonic motility (peristalsis)Facilitation of defecationModulation of secretomotor activity in the colon
04

Disease associations

Bowel dysmotility disorders (e.g., constipation, Hirschsprung disease, neurogenic bowel)Disturbed defecatory reflexes (pelvic nerve injury, spinal cord lesions)Other
05

Safety considerations

Drugs broadly affecting the parasympathetic system may cause dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, etc.Surgical or accidental nerve damage may cause severe constipation or bowel dysfunction
06

Interacting drugs

Anticholinergic drugs (act on neurotransmission by acetylcholine, not on the nerve fiber itself)
