The Parvovirus B19 major capsid protein VP2 is the primary structural component of the B19 virus (B19V) capsid, comprising about 95% of the 60-subunit icosahedral shell (UniProt: P03134). It is essential for viral stability and host cell recognition, specifically binding to the primary cellular receptor, globoside (P antigen), on erythroid progenitor cells (PubMed: 28254970). VP2 is a major target for the host's neutralizing antibody response, making it the cornerstone for diagnostic serology and the development of virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines (PubMed: 24532811). Clinically, B19V infection is associated with erythema infectiosum, transient aplastic crisis, and hydrops fetalis (StatPearls: NBK513256). Therapeutic interventions targeting VP2 include intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for passive immunization and experimental VLP-based vaccines designed to prevent infection in high-risk populations (PubMed: 30115513).
