Overview

The Parvovirus B19 VP2 capsid protein is the major structural component of the human parvovirus B19 virion, constituting approximately 95% of the icosahedral capsid shell (Source: NIH, PMID: 15491413). It plays a pivotal role in viral pathogenesis by mediating high-affinity binding to the primary cellular receptor, globoside (also known as P antigen), which is predominantly expressed on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow and fetal liver (Source: Science, PMID: 8430314). This binding event triggers conformational changes that facilitate viral internalization and subsequent replication, leading to the lysis of red blood cell precursors and the clinical manifestation of anemia. VP2 is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies, making it a central focus for diagnostic serology and the development of virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines (Source: MDPI, PMID: 37630045).
