Patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 4 (PNPLA4) is a member of the patatin-like family of phospholipases. It functions as both a triacylglycerol lipase and transacylase, playing a role in triglyceride metabolism and adipocyte triglyceride homeostasis. The protein transfers fatty acids from triglycerides to retinol, hydrolyzes retinyl esters, and generates 1,3-diacylglycerol from triglycerides. Alternate splicing results in several transcript variants, and mutations in this gene have been associated with combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 8 and dilated cardiomyopathy[1][3][4].
