Overview

Patent ductus arteriosus is a persistent vascular connection between the pulmonary artery and the aorta that normally closes after birth as fetal circulation changes. Its persistence after birth (PDA) is one of the most common congenital heart defects, particularly in premature infants, and can result in abnormal circulation leading to heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and other complications. Management includes medical therapy with cyclooxygenase inhibitors (such as indomethacin or ibuprofen lysine) or procedural/surgical closure when necessary.
