Pathogen adhesion inhibition is a therapeutic strategy focused on disrupting the initial physical contact between a pathogen and its host, a critical step for colonization and infection (Ofek et al., 2003). This process typically involves the binding of microbial surface components, known as adhesins, to specific receptors or glycans on the host cell surface (Sauer et al., 2019). By employing competitive inhibitors, such as carbohydrate analogs or monoclonal antibodies, clinicians can prevent the pathogen from establishing a foothold, thereby facilitating its clearance by the host's natural defenses (Jiang et al., 2012). This strategy is particularly relevant in the treatment of urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and gastric colonization by Helicobacter pylori (Asadi et al., 2019). Unlike traditional antibiotics that kill or inhibit the growth of microbes, adhesion inhibitors often exert less selective pressure, potentially reducing the rate of antimicrobial resistance. However, because this term describes a broad pharmacological mechanism rather than a single biological entity, it encompasses a diverse array of specific molecular targets across various species.
