Pathogen adhesion inhibition on intestinal mucosa refers to a set of biological mechanisms whereby the binding of pathogenic microorganisms (such as bacteria or viruses) to the intestinal mucosal surface is prevented. This can occur via competitive exclusion by probiotic bacteria, secretion of mucins or glycoproteins that mask mucosal receptors, or alteration of mucosal glycosylation patterns. It is considered the first step in the prevention of pathogen colonization and subsequent infection, and is frequently studied in relation to probiotic therapy, mucin biochemistry, and host-pathogen interactions. The process is not a molecular drug target, receptor, or enzyme, but a complex interaction involving multiple host and microbial factors.
