Pathogen antigens recognized by colostrum secretory IgA (sIgA) represent a heterogeneous group of molecular structures from bacteria, viruses, and parasites that are targeted by the maternal immune system to protect the neonate. These antigens include critical virulence factors such as viral capsid proteins (e.g., from Rotavirus), bacterial fimbriae (e.g., from Escherichia coli), and various exotoxins (Hurley & Theil, 2011, Nutrients). Secretory IgA (sIgA) antibodies bind to specific pathogen antigens, such as surface adhesins, viral capsids, or toxins, to prevent their attachment to host epithelial cells (immune exclusion), neutralize biological activity, and facilitate agglutination for mechanical clearance from the gut (Mantis et al., 2011, Mucosal Immunology).
