Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) are small, conserved molecular motifs found in groups of microbes but absent from host cells. These molecules are essential for the survival of the microorganisms and serve as universal signatures that allow the innate immune system to distinguish pathogens from self. PAMPs are recognized by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs), NOD-like receptors, RIG-I-like receptors, AIM2-like receptors, and C-type lectin receptors, which are present on or within various immune and non-immune cells.
