Overview

Pathogen-derived antigens are molecules or molecular components produced by infectious agents—including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites—that can trigger recognition by the host immune system due to their foreignness. These antigens are recognized by antibodies and T cells through interaction with antigen-presenting cells, leading to immune activation, pathogen clearance, or, in rare cases, immune-mediated tissue damage. Their identification and presentation are central to vaccine development, diagnostic testing, and immunotherapy. However, "pathogen-derived antigen" is a functional category rather than a specific molecular drug target. If structured data is required for specific individual antigens (e.g., HIV gp120, tuberculosis Ag85B, influenza hemagglutinin), it is necessary to use the precise molecule name rather than the generic category.

04

Disease associations

Infection (bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic)Vaccine development
05

Safety considerations

Antigenic cross-reactivity causing autoimmunity (when pathogen antigens mimic self-antigens)Allergic reactions to non-pathogenic antigens (e.g., pollen, food)Pathogen antigen diversity and mutation can hinder vaccine design

Biomarkers

Detection of pathogen-derived antigens in blood or tissues is widely used for diagnostic purposes (e.g., rapid antigen tests for viral infection)Used for monitoring vaccine efficacy
