Pathogen growth is the biological process through which infectious microorganisms—including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—multiply and increase their population size within a host environment (NCBI, 2023). This process is fundamental to the progression of infectious diseases, as the accumulation of pathogens and their metabolic byproducts leads to tissue damage and systemic host immune responses (StatPearls, 2023). While pathogen growth itself is not a specific molecular target like an enzyme or receptor, it is the primary physiological outcome that clinicians aim to inhibit using antimicrobial therapies (CDC, 2022).
