Overview

Pathogen reproduction refers to the collective biological processes by which infectious agents, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, multiply and increase their population within a host organism (NIH, 2022). This term does not describe a single molecular target like a protein or receptor, but rather a complex physiological outcome involving numerous distinct enzymatic and structural pathways. Anti-infective drugs achieve therapeutic efficacy by targeting specific components of this process, such as DNA polymerases in viruses or the 30S/50S ribosomal subunits in bacteria, thereby halting the progression of the infection (StatPearls, 2023). Successfully inhibiting pathogen reproduction is the fundamental goal of antimicrobial therapy to prevent tissue damage and systemic spread (CDC, 2023). However, the use of this term as a specific drug target is considered scientifically imprecise in a drug discovery context, as pharmacological intervention must be directed at specific, druggable molecular entities (WHO, 2021).
