Pathogenic activated CD4 T cells are a subset of CD4+ T lymphocytes that, upon activation by antigen presentation, contribute to immune responses but can also drive pathological processes such as autoimmunity and chronic inflammation. These cells are distinguished from normal helper or regulatory CD4+ T cells by their pro-inflammatory cytokine profiles and their role in mediating tissue damage. They are central players in many autoimmune diseases and are targets for immunomodulatory therapies aiming to restore balance between effector and regulatory arms of the adaptive immune system.
