Pathogenic anaerobic bacteria are a broadly defined group of bacteria capable of causing human disease in low-oxygen or oxygen-free environments. These include both Gram-negative (e.g., Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Prevotella) and Gram-positive (e.g., Clostridium, Peptostreptococcus, Actinomyces) genera. They are normal constituents of human mucosal microbiota but can cause serious infections—often polymicrobial—when they invade sterile tissues, typically after trauma, surgery, or disruption of anatomic barriers. Infections by these bacteria are characterized by abscesses, tissue necrosis, and sometimes gas formation; some species produce potent toxins contributing to diseases like botulism, tetanus, and colitis. Treatment strategies target broad classes of anaerobes using drugs such as metronidazole, beta-lactams, and carbapenems, but increasing antimicrobial resistance is a growing concern, especially among Bacteroides. Because this is not a single molecular entity but a broad pathogen category, it is not a canonical molecular drug target.
