Overview

Pathogenic antigens are specific molecules or molecular structures found on or produced by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and parasites that cause disease in their hosts. These antigens are recognized as "foreign" by the host immune system and trigger an immune response aimed at neutralizing or eliminating the pathogen. They are central targets for vaccine development because they stimulate immunological memory without causing disease themselves. Diagnostic tests often detect either pathogenic antigens directly (antigen tests) or antibodies generated against them.
