Overview

Pathogenic bacteria in the gut are microorganisms capable of causing disease by disrupting normal intestinal function, evading host defenses, or producing toxins. These bacteria interact dynamically with the resident gut microbiota and the host immune system, influencing health and disease states. They can colonize the intestine when normal microbiota balance is disturbed, leading to overgrowth of harmful species. Pathogens employ various strategies for survival, including competing for nutrients, exploiting metabolic byproducts, producing toxins, and modulating host immune responses. Disruption of the healthy gut microbiome can reduce microbial diversity and open ecological niches for pathogens to proliferate, potentially leading to acute infections, chronic inflammation, or systemic dissemination.

Mechanism of action

Antibiotics directly target and kill/inhibit bacterial growth. Probiotics aim to restore a healthy gut microbiota. FMT replaces the patient's gut microbiota with that of a healthy donor.
