Bacterial adhesins are specialized surface proteins or appendages found on pathogenic bacteria that mediate strong and specific binding to receptors on host cells or tissues. This interaction is essential for initiating infection because it allows bacteria to overcome physical forces such as fluid flow and immune clearance mechanisms within the host environment. Adhesion is often mediated by structures like pili/fimbriae in Gram-negative bacteria—where tip proteins act as actual ligands—or by cell wall-associated proteins/polysaccharides in Gram-positive species.
