Pathogenic bacteria and components refer to a broad category of disease-causing prokaryotic microorganisms and their structural or secreted elements, such as lipopolysaccharides, peptidoglycans, and toxins (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2021). In pharmacological research, they are not viewed as a single molecular target but rather as a diverse set of biological structures that are the focus of antibiotic and vaccine development. Antibiotics exert their effects by exploiting the biochemical differences between bacterial and eukaryotic cells, specifically targeting bacterial cell wall assembly, protein synthesis machinery, and DNA replication enzymes (Frontiers in Microbiology, 2020). The clinical management of these pathogens is increasingly complicated by the global rise of antimicrobial resistance and the need to preserve the host's beneficial microbiota (The Lancet, 2022). Consequently, this category represents a major area of focus for infectious disease research and public health initiatives.
Antibacterial agents target these entities by inhibiting cell wall synthesis (e.g., beta-lactams), disrupting protein synthesis at the ribosome (e.g., macrolides, aminoglycosides), inhibiting nucleic acid replication (e.g., fluoroquinolones), or damaging the bacterial cell membrane (e.g., polymyxins) (StatPearls, 2023; Microbiology Spectrum, 2019).
