Pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity refers collectively to bacterial species capable of causing oral diseases such as dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis. This group includes Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, notably *Streptococcus mutans* and *Lactobacillus spp.* (cariogenic), and *Porphyromonas gingivalis*, *Treponema denticola*, *Tannerella forsythia*, *Fusobacterium nucleatum*, *Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans*, and others associated with periodontal disease[1][3][7]. These bacteria interact with oral surfaces to form biofilms (plaque), produce acids and proteolytic enzymes that degrade host tissues, evade the immune system, and can develop antibiotic resistance[2][3][5]. Treatments target these bacteria with antibiotics, antiseptics, or probiotics, though antibiotic resistance and disruption of beneficial oral microbiota remain important safety concerns[2][3].
