Pathogenic bacterial adhesion to mucosa refers to the initial and critical step in many infections where bacteria attach themselves to the mucus layer covering epithelial cells in various organs such as the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. This attachment is mediated by specialized bacterial surface structures called adhesins—often fimbriae or pili—which recognize and bind specific receptors on the host's mucosal surfaces[2][3]. The ability of bacteria to adhere is essential for colonization and subsequent infection. In healthy individuals, ciliary clearance helps remove adherent bacteria from respiratory mucus; however, when this defense is compromised due to injury or disease, pathogens can multiply and invade underlying tissues[1]. Some beneficial probiotic bacteria can competitively inhibit pathogenic adhesion by occupying binding sites on the mucosa[2]. While "bacterial adhesion" itself is not a discrete molecular target like an enzyme or receptor but rather a complex biological event involving multiple molecules from both pathogen and host sides, it remains an important focus for anti-infective strategies aiming at preventing colonization rather than killing pathogens directly.
