01

Overview

Pathogenic Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) strain colonization refers to the presence and persistence of toxigenic C. difficile bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract without necessarily causing symptomatic infection. Colonization is distinct from infection: it is defined as detection of the organism in the absence of clinical symptoms such as diarrhea, ileus, or toxic megacolon. Colonized individuals can serve as reservoirs for transmission and are at increased risk for developing C. difficile infection (CDI), especially after disruption of normal gut microbiota. Virulence factors include TcdA, TcdB, and sometimes CDT.

Mechanism of action

N/A - Colonization is a state, not a target with a mechanism of action. However, drugs like Fidaxomicin and Vancomycin target C. difficile itself to reduce bacterial load and prevent further colonization/infection.
