Pathogenic gut and mucosal microorganisms encompass a diverse array of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites that colonize and invade the gastrointestinal and mucosal surfaces, leading to disease (NIH, 2023). These organisms, such as Clostridioides difficile, Helicobacter pylori, and various Salmonella species, disrupt the normal physiological functions of the host through toxin production, direct cellular invasion, and induction of inflammatory responses (StatPearls, 2023). While the gut microbiota is primarily commensal and beneficial, the overgrowth or introduction of these pathogens can lead to conditions ranging from acute gastroenteritis to chronic inflammatory diseases (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2021). Therapeutic intervention typically involves the use of antimicrobial agents designed to inhibit specific microbial processes, such as cell wall synthesis or nucleic acid replication (PubMed, 2022). However, such treatments often face challenges like antibiotic resistance and the collateral destruction of beneficial flora, which can lead to further complications like dysbiosis (WHO, 2023). Understanding the complex interactions between these pathogens and the host immune system is critical for developing targeted therapies and vaccines (NCBI, 2023).
