Overview

A pathogenic microbial antigen is any molecule, typically a protein, polysaccharide, lipid, or nucleic acid, present on or produced by a pathogenic microbe (bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic) that is recognized as foreign by the host immune system[1][2][3][6][7]. These antigens serve as triggers for adaptive immune responses, including the production of antibodies and activation of T-cells. Recognition involves molecular interaction between the antigen and immune receptors such as antibodies, T-cell receptors, or B-cell receptors. Each infectious microbe expresses many antigens; some (e.g., viral capsid proteins, bacterial toxins, surface glycoproteins) are highly immunogenic and serve as targets for vaccine and diagnostic development[2][3]. The term is not specific to one structure but includes a multitude of structurally and functionally diverse molecular entities, each with its own potential as a therapeutic, diagnostic, or vaccine target[1][2][3][7].
