Pathogenic microorganism colonization refers to the presence and multiplication of potentially harmful microorganisms—such as bacteria, fungi, or viruses—on or within a host without causing overt symptoms or tissue invasion. This state is distinct from infection because there is no clinical evidence of disease at the time. However, individuals who are colonized can still act as reservoirs for pathogen transmission and may develop infections if their immune defenses are compromised or if invasive procedures provide entry points for these microbes. Common sites include skin, mucous membranes (such as nose and throat), gastrointestinal tract, wounds, and medical devices. Colonization plays a significant role in healthcare settings by facilitating the spread of antimicrobial-resistant organisms; thus, screening and decolonization strategies are sometimes used to prevent outbreaks[1][3][5][7][8][9]. Note: "Pathogenic microorganism colonization" describes a biological process rather than a discrete molecular target such as an enzyme or receptor.
