Overview

Pathogenic oral bacteria collectively refer to numerous bacterial species capable of causing oral diseases. These include gram-negative anaerobes (such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola), as well as facultative anaerobes like Streptococcus mutans and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. These bacteria reside in the oral cavity, frequently form part of polymicrobial biofilms (dental plaque), and contribute to dental caries, periodontal disease, and other oral infections. They exhibit diverse pathogenic mechanisms, including biofilm formation, acid production, immune modulation, and the secretion of proteases and toxins. Due to their diverse nature, "pathogenic oral bacteria" are not a single molecular target but rather a descriptor of a functional group relevant in infectious disease and oral health[1][3][4][5][6].
