Pathogenic toxins represent a broad and heterogeneous category of virulence factors produced by microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that directly cause host tissue damage or systemic disease (StatPearls, 2023). These substances are generally classified as endotoxins, which are structural components of the microbial cell wall like lipopolysaccharides, or exotoxins, which are actively secreted proteins that can function as enzymes, pore-formers, or intracellular modulators (NIH, 2022). Targeted therapies, including monoclonal antibodies like Bezlotoxumab and Raxibacumab, function by neutralizing these toxins in the bloodstream or tissues, thereby preventing them from interacting with host receptors and halting the progression of the disease (NEJM, 2017; FDA, 2012).
