Overview

Pathogenic toxins represent a broad and heterogeneous category of virulence factors produced by microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that directly cause host tissue damage or systemic disease (StatPearls, 2023). Toxins drive the pathophysiology of numerous severe conditions, such as the neuroparalysis seen in botulism or the lethal toxemia of anthrax, by disrupting vital cellular processes like neurotransmitter release or protein synthesis (PubMed, 2019). Because these molecules are often the primary cause of morbidity rather than the microbe itself, they serve as critical therapeutic targets. Targeted therapies, including monoclonal antibodies like Bezlotoxumab and Raxibacumab, function by neutralizing these toxins in the bloodstream or tissues, thereby preventing them from interacting with host receptors and halting the progression of the disease (NEJM, 2017; FDA, 2012).
