Pathogenic vaginal bacteria refer to a diverse group of predominantly anaerobic microorganisms that proliferate during vaginal dysbiosis, most notably in Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). Key species involved in this condition include Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, and various Prevotella and Mobiluncus species (StatPearls, 2023). These pathogens displace the healthy, lactic acid-producing Lactobacillus population, leading to an increase in vaginal pH and the production of malodorous amines and polymicrobial biofilms (Nature Reviews Disease Primers, 2020). Clinically, the presence of these bacteria is associated with increased risks of pelvic inflammatory disease, preterm birth, and heightened susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections, including HIV (CDC, 2021). Therapeutic intervention typically involves broad-spectrum or anaerobic-targeted antibiotics like metronidazole or clindamycin, which aim to reduce the pathogen load and allow for the restoration of a healthy microbiome. However, the formation of resilient biofilms often leads to high rates of recurrence, presenting a significant therapeutic challenge in clinical practice.
Drugs targeting these organisms typically act by inhibiting DNA synthesis (nitroimidazoles like metronidazole), inhibiting protein synthesis (lincosamides like clindamycin), or disrupting bacterial cell membranes (quaternary ammonium compounds like dequalinium chloride).
