Viral pathogen

Viral pathogen" is a general term used for any virus that causes disease in a host organism. It does not denote a singular molecular target, receptor, protein, or nucleic acid, but rather a class of infectious agents with diverse genetic material (DNA or RNA, single or double stranded), taxonomic classifications, and mechanisms of infection and replication[1][2][4][5]. While many antiviral drugs target specific viral proteins or enzymes (like proteases, polymerases, or attachment/entry proteins), "viral pathogen" itself is not a single molecular target and cannot be assigned definitive interacting drugs, mechanisms of action, or biomarker lists. Virus classification is vast and structured hierarchically across orders, families, genera, and species, with each virus possessing unique targets—such as the ACE2 receptor for SARS-CoV-2 or DPP4 for MERS-CoV—that may be of therapeutic interest in specific cases[1][4][6]. However, "viral pathogen" is simply a categorical label, not a druggable entity.
