Pathogenic wind-heat syndrome

01

Overview

Pathogenic wind-heat syndrome is a diagnostic pattern in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that describes the body's response to the invasion of external wind and heat pathogens, primarily affecting the lungs and the defensive (Wei) system. It is clinically characterized by symptoms such as fever, slight aversion to cold, headache, sore throat, cough with thick yellow sputum, and a floating, rapid pulse. In modern clinical practice, this syndrome is often correlated with acute upper respiratory tract infections, influenza, and early-stage viral pneumonia. Because it is a symptom-based pattern (syndrome) rather than a specific protein, enzyme, or receptor, it does not constitute a molecular therapeutic target in the conventional pharmacological sense. Research in integrative medicine often attempts to map this syndrome to systemic inflammatory responses and cytokine profiles, but it remains a clinical classification rather than a discrete biological molecule.

Mechanism of action

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments for this syndrome aim to dispel external wind, clear heat, and resolve the exterior (diaphoretic action).
