Target intelligence / Profile preview
Pathogens and microbial antigens represent a broad category of biological agents and their constituent molecules that trigger immune responses (Alberts et al., 2002). Pathogens include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, while antigens are specific structures—often proteins or polysaccharides—recognized by the immune system (Murphy & Weaver, 2016). These entities are central to the development of infectious diseases, where they may cause direct cellular damage or elicit harmful inflammatory cascades (NIAID, 2023). Therapeutic intervention typically involves antimicrobial drugs that disrupt pathogen-specific metabolic pathways or vaccines that utilize microbial antigens to train the host immune system (WHO, 2021). A major challenge in targeting these entities is the emergence of antimicrobial resistance and the high rate of mutation in certain pathogens, which can lead to immune evasion (WHO, 2023). Furthermore, the diversity of microbial antigens necessitates the development of broad-spectrum or highly specific therapeutic strategies depending on the clinical context.
Antimicrobial drugs target pathogens by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, protein synthesis, or nucleic acid replication, while vaccines and monoclonal antibodies target specific microbial antigens to neutralize the pathogen or prime the host immune system for clearance (Murphy & Weaver, 2016; WHO, 2021).
