Overview

PBX1 antisense RNA 1 (PBX1-AS1) is a human long non-coding RNA gene located antisense to the PBX1 gene[5]. PBX1-AS1 does not encode a protein but may regulate the expression of PBX1, a homeobox transcription factor involved in diverse developmental processes and oncogenesis[1][3][5]. While PBX1 itself is a therapeutic target in cancer and immune diseases[7], PBX1-AS1 is studied primarily for its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation and its potential involvement in cancer biology. There is no current evidence that PBX1-AS1 has direct receptor, enzyme, or transporter activity, nor any approved or investigational drugs directly targeting it. Research on PBX1-AS1 mainly focuses on its regulatory effect on PBX1 expression and its possible association with disease processes, particularly cancer.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; as PBX1-AS1 is a non-coding RNA, it does not possess binding sites or enzymatic activity typical of drug targets. Any therapeutic targeting would be at the RNA level (e.g., antisense oligonucleotides or RNAi to modulate its expression).

03

Biological functions

Gene regulation (including regulation of PBX1 expression via antisense RNA mechanisms)May play a role in chromatin modification and transcriptional control as observed for other lncRNAs
04

Disease associations

Cancer (may act as a regulatory RNA in cancer contexts through regulation of PBX1, a known oncogene and transcription factor[1][3])
05

Safety considerations

None reported; as a non-coding RNA transcript, specific therapeutic challenges would relate to safe and effective delivery and specificity of RNA-targeting modalities, rather than classic pharmacological safety concerns.
06

Biomarkers

None established for patient selection or efficacy monitoring; PBX1-AS1 expression could potentially serve as a research biomarker for certain cancers.
