Overview

Pectin is a structurally complex family of galacturonic acid-rich polysaccharides found in the primary and secondary cell walls of higher plants[1][2][3][5][6][8]. It is composed mainly of a linear backbone of α-(1,4)-linked D-galacturonic acid residues, with regions containing other sugars such as rhamnose, galactose, arabinose, and various side chains. The main domains of pectin are homogalacturonan (HG), rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I), rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II), and xylogalacturonan (XGA)[1][5][8]. Pectin’s primary biological function is to bind plant cells together, provide mechanical strength, control wall porosity, and participate in plant defense responses[1][6][7]. It is also industrially important as a gelling and stabilizing agent in the food industry, and is recognized as a dietary fiber with some health benefits[1][2]. Importantly, pectin is not a molecule or receptor that acts as a therapeutic drug target—it is not a protein, enzyme, transporter, receptor, or other classical drug target. Instead, it is a plant-derived polysaccharide and does not act via specific, targetable molecular mechanisms in pharmacology or human disease. No relevant drugs act on pectin, and it does not serve as a biomarker or have recognized therapeutic safety concerns.
