Overview
Pelargonium sidoides is a medicinal plant from South Africa used traditionally and in modern phytopharmaceuticals like EPs® 7630 (Umckaloabo®) to treat respiratory tract infections. Its root extract contains polyphenols, coumarins, and other bioactive compounds that exhibit antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and antiadhesive properties. Clinical trials support its efficacy in reducing symptoms of acute bronchitis, rhinosinusitis, common cold, and COPD. While generally safe for short-term use, long-term safety data is limited.
