Overview

The pelvic autonomic nerves, primarily organized into the inferior hypogastric plexus, constitute a critical neural network providing sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation to the pelvic organs, including the bladder, rectum, and reproductive organs (StatPearls, 2023). These nerves are formed by the confluence of the hypogastric nerves and the pelvic splanchnic nerves, facilitating complex physiological processes such as micturition, defecation, and sexual function (NIH, 2022). While not a molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, they are of paramount importance in surgical oncology, where nerve-sparing techniques are employed to preserve quality of life following radical pelvic surgeries (PubMed, 2021). Dysfunction or iatrogenic injury to these nerves leads to significant morbidity, including urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Pharmacological interaction is typically limited to regional anesthesia or the use of neuromodulators like botulinum toxin to manage overactive symptoms or pain (Journal of Urology, 2020). In the context of chronic pain, these nerves may be targeted for diagnostic or therapeutic blocks to interrupt nociceptive signaling. Overall, they represent an anatomical target for physical and chemical intervention rather than a specific protein target for systemic drug development.
