Penicillin-binding protein 1C (PBP1C) is a bacterial enzyme involved in the synthesis of peptidoglycan, an essential component of the bacterial cell wall in Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli. It belongs to the family of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and possesses both transglycosylase and transpeptidase activity, catalyzing peptidoglycan polymerization and cross-linking, respectively. It is a target for β-lactam antibiotics.
