Penicillin-binding protein 2x (PBP2x) is a high-molecular-weight, membrane-associated enzyme found in *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. It plays a critical role in the final stages of peptidoglycan assembly, which is essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis and integrity. PBP2x is a transpeptidase that catalyzes the formation of peptide cross-links between adjacent glycan strands during cell wall peptidoglycan biosynthesis. It is a target for beta-lactam antibiotics, and mutations in pbpX encoding PBP2x are a mechanism by which *S. pneumoniae* develops resistance to these antibiotics.
