Penicillin-binding protein 5

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Penicillin-binding protein
01

Overview

Penicillin-binding protein 5 (PBP5) is an enzyme involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis and remodeling. It functions primarily as a D-alanyl-D-alanine carboxypeptidase, regulating peptidoglycan cross-linking. In some species, PBP5 also exhibits beta-lactamase activity or low affinity for beta-lactam antibiotics, contributing to antibiotic resistance. It is found in Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecium, making it clinically relevant in the context of drug-resistant infections.
