Penicillin-Binding Protein Transglycosylase Activity (PBP)

Target
PBP
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Peptidoglycan biosynthesis enzyme, Transglycosylase, Transpeptidase
01

Overview

Penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) are a group of enzymes crucial for bacterial cell wall synthesis. They possess transglycosylase activity, which polymerizes glycan chains, and transpeptidase activity, which cross-links peptide side chains, providing structural integrity to the bacterial cell wall. PBPs are the primary target for β-lactam antibiotics, which inhibit their activity, leading to bacterial lysis. Resistance can arise through mutations or acquisition of alternative PBPs. Some PBPs also act as sensors regulating antibiotic resistance mechanisms.
