Penicillin-specific IgE antibody is a type of immunoglobulin E produced by B cells in individuals sensitized to penicillin or its analogues. When penicillin covalently modifies self-proteins, it creates neo-epitopes (hapten-carrier complexes) that stimulate the immune system to make specific IgE. Upon subsequent exposure to penicillin, IgE bound to mast cells and basophils triggers the release of histamine and other mediators, causing immediate allergy symptoms ranging from urticaria to life-threatening anaphylaxis. The antibody is detected in diagnostic allergy tests and serves as a biomarker for penicillin allergy but is not itself a therapeutic target or receptor.
Sensitization: IgE antibody binds penicillin-hapten conjugates on B cells and mast cells. Upon re-exposure, cross-linking of IgE by penicillin triggers cell activation and release of histamine/inflammatory mediators causing allergic symptoms (e.g., urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis).
