Overview

Pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids are a group of bioactive compounds found primarily in the bark and root of the South American plants Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria guianensis, commonly known as cat’s claw. These small-molecule plant alkaloids have been claimed to modulate the immune system by increasing white blood cell activity and elevating interleukin‑1 levels. Laboratory studies suggest they may also suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha. Additional purported effects include antioxidant, anti-mutagenic, and anti-inflammatory actions through multiple pathways. While cat’s claw extracts containing these alkaloids are used traditionally for arthritis, digestive issues, viral infections, cancer prevention/treatment claims remain unproven. There is no evidence that pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids represent a single defined therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme; rather they act via broad immunomodulatory mechanisms on multiple cellular pathways.
