Peptide Elongation Factor 2 (eEF2)

Target
eEF2
Molecular classification
GTP-binding protein, Enzyme
01

Overview

Peptide elongation factor 2 (eEF2) is an essential GTP-binding protein involved in the process of protein synthesis in eukaryotic and archaeal cells. It catalyzes the GTP-dependent translocation step during mRNA translation, promoting the movement of ribosomes along mRNA after peptide bond formation. Its activity is tightly regulated by phosphorylation, and it is targeted by bacterial toxins like diphtheria toxin and exotoxin A, which inhibit its function and lead to cell death.
