Target intelligence / Profile preview
Peptide YY-2 (PYY2) is a putative peptide believed to have arisen from recent gene duplication of the peptide YY (PYY) and pancreatic polypeptide (PPY) gene cluster in primates and some other species. The PYY2 gene shows extensive nucleotide and peptide sequence homology with the canonical PYY gene, but it is not established as a functional protein or secreted peptide in humans. There is, as yet, no clear evidence that PYY2 encodes a functional processed peptide with biological activity, nor that it acts as a classical molecular target (receptor, enzyme, etc.). No receptor called "peptide YY 2" or "PYY2 receptor" has been described in the scientific literature. Key clarifications & Issues: - Not a receptor/target: There is no receptor known as "peptide YY 2 receptor" or "PYY2 receptor." - Not a drug target: No drug directly targets "Peptide YY-2." - Is a gene, not a validated protein or target: The PYY2 gene exists in some mammalian genomes due to gene duplication but its peptide product, if any, is not established as a functional molecule in humans or as a participant in any therapeutically relevant pathway. - Misannotation or confusion with PYY: Some sources or naming conventions may confuse this putative gene product with peptide YY (PYY), which is a well-known appetite-regulating hormone and ligand for the Y2 receptor. However, "PYY2" is not the same as the canonical "PYY" or "Y2 receptor." Summary: PYY2 refers to a putative gene product, not a validated receptor, enzyme, or other molecular target. No biological, pharmacological, or clinical targeting information exists. The gene is the result of a recent duplication event within the neuropeptide Y gene family and remains poorly characterized. Any reference to "PYY2" as a therapeutic receptor or drug target is likely based on a misunderstanding or misannotation.
