Peptide YY receptors are a family of G-protein-coupled receptors that mediate the effects of peptide YY (PYY), a gut hormone involved in appetite regulation, gastrointestinal motility, and energy homeostasis. The Y2 receptor is the most selective for PYY(3–36), the predominant circulating form after food intake. Activation of these receptors, particularly Y2R in the hypothalamus, leads to reduced food intake. These receptors are considered potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic disorders.
Agonists or antagonists targeting specific PYY receptor subtypes (e.g., Y2R) modulate downstream signaling pathways via Gi/o protein coupling, leading to altered cAMP levels and changes in neuronal activity related to appetite and GI function.
