OprL is a peptidoglycan-associated lipoprotein found in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It's an 18 kDa outer membrane protein that plays important roles in bacterial membrane integrity and stress response. OprL helps maintain bacterial membrane integrity and contributes to hydrogen peroxide resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. OprL is a newly discovered phasin involved in polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biology in Pseudomonas putida KT2440, where it localizes to carbonosomes (PHA storage granules). The expression of OprL is regulated by multiple factors including iron availability and growth phase. It forms part of the tol-oprL gene cluster in P. aeruginosa, which contains three major transcriptional units: orf1-tolQRA, tolB, and oprL-orf2. The protein is encoded by an ORF of 504 bp, and the gene is located downstream of tolB and upstream of orf2. When expressed in E. coli, OprL causes abnormal, elongated cell morphology, suggesting it disrupts the normal cell division process. As an outer membrane protein involved in bacterial membrane integrity, OprL could potentially serve as a target for antimicrobial development. Its role in hydrogen peroxide resistance suggests it may contribute to bacterial survival during oxidative stress, such as that encountered during host immune responses. Note: This protein should not be confused with the nociceptin opioid peptide receptor (also known as OPRL1 in humans), which is an entirely different protein involved in pain perception and neurological functions.
