Peptidoglycan Biosynthesis Enzyme

Molecular classification
Enzyme
01

Overview

Peptidoglycan biosynthesis enzymes are a group of bacterial proteins responsible for the stepwise construction of peptidoglycan, a critical component of the bacterial cell wall. Peptidoglycan provides structural strength, maintains cell shape, and protects bacteria from osmotic lysis. These enzymes catalyze reactions that assemble sugar and peptide subunits into a mesh-like polymer unique to bacteria. This process is essential for bacterial growth, division, and survival. Disruption leads to loss of cell wall integrity and ultimately cell lysis. Many antibiotics target these biosynthetic enzymes, exploiting differences between prokaryotic peptidoglycan synthesis machinery and eukaryotic cells.
