The peptidoglycan biosynthesis enzyme complex refers to the collection of enzymes and associated protein machinery responsible for the synthesis of peptidoglycan, a critical component of the bacterial cell wall. Peptidoglycan provides structural integrity, maintains cell shape, and protects bacteria from osmotic lysis. This biosynthetic process is unique to bacteria and is a major target for antibiotics. Key enzymes include GlmS, GlmM, GlmU, MurA-F, MraY, MurG, MurJ, and PBPs. The process is organized into the elongasome and divisome complexes.
