The presence and structure of this motif are essential for proper cross-linking during cell wall biosynthesis in bacteria and serves as a target for antibiotics.
β-lactam antibiotics inhibit transpeptidases by mimicking D-Ala-D-Ala. Glycopeptides bind to D-Ala-D-Ala, blocking transpeptidase access.
