Peptidyl Transferase

Molecular classification
Ribozyme, Enzyme
01

Overview

Peptidyl transferase is a ribozyme located in the large subunit of the ribosome that catalyzes peptide bond formation during protein synthesis and peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis during translation termination. The catalytic activity is performed entirely by ribosomal RNA (rRNA), specifically the 23S rRNA in prokaryotes and the 28S rRNA in eukaryotes. Many antibiotics target this center to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis.

02

Mechanism of action

Inhibition of peptide bond formation by binding to the peptidyl transferase center (PTC) of the ribosome, thereby disrupting protein synthesis.
