Peptidyl transferase is the catalytic activity located within the 23S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) of the large (50S) subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes. It catalyzes peptide bond formation between amino acids during protein synthesis, a central step in translation. The peptidyl transferase center (PTC), formed primarily by domain V of 23S rRNA, acts as a ribozyme. Many antibiotics target the PTC/23S rRNA to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis.
