The peptidyl transferase activity is a fundamental enzymatic function of the ribosome, responsible for catalyzing peptide bond formation during protein synthesis. This activity occurs at a specialized region known as the peptidyl transferase center (PTC), which is located in the large subunit of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic ribosomes. The PTC is an RNA-based enzyme (ribozyme), not a protein enzyme. Its catalytic function is carried out entirely by ribosomal RNA (rRNA). It is a crucial target for many antibiotics.
